Atopic skin
What is it?
Atopic skin is a skin condition that is primarily characterized by dryness, which leads to flaking and irritation, and also causes irritating symptoms such as itching. It is a natural form of dry skin with a little water and oil, so it flakes and irritates easily.
This definition was given by Eduardo López Bran, dermatologist-founder of the Imema aesthetic clinic in Madrid.
The reasons
Experts agree that the main cause of this skin disease is genetic predisposition. But there are certain environmental, allergic and food factors, and even clothing that provoke and aggravate it.
It is a disease that affects almost 20 percent of children and lasts into adulthood. "Three to five percent of adults will still have atopic skin," says López.
The expert also reports that the incidence of the disease is increasing due to lifestyle habits and the agents associated with environmental pollution, lack of sleep and the stress that causes it.
Atopic dermatitis affects infants and children and, to a lesser extent, adults. In children, it usually appears on the face and in areas of flexion such as the shoves, knees, the inside of the wrist or scalp, and the legs and buttocks. Babies develop dry, flaky skin that can be easily removed.
In adults, these irritations appear on the face and body. Even so, be it an adult or a child, these changes are accompanied by a more or less intense itch and a possible scratching.
Prevention
As already explained, atopic skin is a disease that cannot be prevented since it is caused by a genetic predisposition. Therefore, the only article you can do is control it and combat the factors that exacerbate it.
Atopic skin is a condition that decreases with the transition from child to adult, but does not go away completely. However, there are several conducts to avoid it. “Above all, adequately hydrate the skin using emollient or moisturizing creams and shower oils to keep the skin hydrated,” says López.
The dermatologist recommends that you shower with lukewarm water for no more than ten minutes using bath oils. Soap should be limited to the genitals, armpits, and feet only. After that, it is useful to apply emollient creams and blot the water without rubbing.
But above all, the most important advice to follow is "lead a stress-free life with daily exercise, as this helps minimize outbreaks of atopic dermatitis," says the dermatologist.
