What is the atopic dermatitis?
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic seditious skin disorder that causes severe itching. It usually manifests itself from childhood. It is called "atopic" because it does not affect a specific area, but it can affect different parts of the body.
Prognosis of the
disease
The disease is usually chronic: with proper treatment, symptoms can be controlled, but sometimes they never completely go away. However, in some cases, the pathology disappears during adolescence.
In cases where the disease continues even into adulthood (that is, it becomes chronic), its manifestations worsen over time.
Symptoms of Atopic
Dermatitis.
At the time of the appearance of dermatitis, the child may experience the following symptoms:
Dry Skin;
the presence of erythema, vesicles, scabs and eczema.
As the disease becomes chronic in adulthood, the symptoms become more intrusive; In addition to those mentioned above, you can add:
hyperkeratosis;
thickening of the
skin;
the appearance of
papules;
very severe
itching;
cracks with blood;
Sensitive to skin infections due to eczema, which favors bacterial growth.
Diagnosis of
atopic dermatitis
The dermatologist analyzes the lesions in the following ways:
first objective
visit;
patch test (some
allergenic substances are applied to the skin);
biopsy (rarely, to
exclude serious pathologies associated with atopic dermatitis);
doses of type E
and specific immunoglobulins;
puncture test;
diagnostic tests for respiratory diseases such as asthma,
rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis, which can influence the development of atopic
dermatitis.
What are the
causes of atopic dermatitis?
This is a multifactorial disease, that is, caused by
several factors at the same time. The most common causes can be:
genetic predisposition;
changes in the movement of enzymes that protect the skin,
preserving the hydrolipidic film of the skin;
stress;
exposure to allergens or irritants;
perspiration
Can this be
prevented?
It is difficult to prevent the appearance of dermatitis, but you can prevent its chronic development (almost exclusively in childhood) or reduce its symptoms (at any stage of the disease, and therefore also in adulthood) by taking some precautions:
choose gentle cleansers for skin care;
wear clothes made of cotton, linen or other natural
fibers, preferably loose fitting;
be very careful when choosing cosmetics and makeup
products (fragrance and allergen free).
